TOPPER?Thorne Smith?McBride ($2). Cosmo Topper is a Better Babbitt of the East Orange, N. J., type, early thwarted into respectability by his dyspeptic wife and his commutation ticket. The fun starts when he buys the low-hum, nickel-plated car which carried sprightly George and Marion Kerby into the next world. Passing the tree where they came to grief, Topper is joined by spiritistic versions of the Kerbys, and during the adventures that follow he comes to love them as childish prankers. The belated release of Topper is rather pathetic, but mirth is the tale's mother element...
...reviewer's text. It is neither very bad nor superlatively good, but of a consistent merit which is the aim of every seasoned magazine editor. The stories can be read to the end; the scant verse rhymes, once unpleasantly; the editorial page assures us that it has been a hum-drum season, above stairs and below. The one article of distinctive quality is Mr. Pell's "Documentary Adventures in Old New York", the third in a series, and if it lacks a little of the high finish of the two preceding contributions, this is accounted for in part...

The result is a sufficiently mellifluous series of tunes which every member of the audience can hum between the acts and on the way out.
