Only in one masterful sequence at the center of the film, when Kapur pulls back the curtain on Elizabeth, rehearsing a momentous address to the bishops of England, does the Queen herself take center stage as a feminist vision of powerful womanhood--using intelligence, humor and finesse to spellbind her subjects with her own authority. For once, the film emerges from the shadow of its most prominent artistic antecedent: The Godfather. In this sequence, we watch as Elizabeth rewrites history, beginning her speech halting and uncertain, and slowly coming into her own as a power broker. This, finally...

...Tracks takes a downward turn. "This Hard Land" is bright and memorable: It is especially easy to remember since Springsteen also included it--for reasons known only to Springsteen--on his Greatest Hits album. Several songs--such as "TV Movie" and "Part Man, Part Monkey"--are intended to be humorous and satirical, but Sprinsteen has always done best when conveying gentle humor and playfulness not through clever lyrics but through whimsical music, as in Born in the U.S.A.'s "Glory Days." Those who appreciate the hardscrabble optimist Springsteen of Joad will love "The Wish" and "The Honeymooners," but some will...

...point, Allie tries desperately to convince Eddie that Jake is a "sensitive" guy--she remembers the time he tried to cheer her up by complimenting her hands (a line ripped off from e.e. cummings, no less.) The one character in the entire movie who can be called really humorous is the illegal electronics peddler who accidentally hits Jake with his van (sadly, the movie doesn't end) and remorsefully offers to drive the kid east. Then again, maybe that's just because Andy Lauer fills the role with the same innocent humor he brings to Caroline in the City...

...take on the rest of the world in fun adventures and tackle surprisingly adult issues in a manner which still leaves room for poop jokes. The great thing about the series is that while small children love the simplicity of the adventures, the show also throws in enough sophisticated humor for older viewers to have a good time watching...

...solo album lives up to his billing. A theme album, Bobby Digital looks at the exploits of a partially mechanized creature. As you might guess, given the B-movie setup, not all of the album makes sense, but RZA does create an atmosphere of sci-fi menace and scatological humor. The music is propelled by elastic rhythms and scattershot rapping. Several tracks are vulgar and misogynistic, but RZA tries to show his softer side with a hiccuping hip-hop cover of the soul song Love Jones. This is a fine album. Romance never seemed...
