...bloodline that Lowell did in his poetry--the very hypocrisy that drove the latter many times to violently manic depressive breakdowns in various mental hospitals along the East Coast. However, Stuart sees the situation not as mentally debilitating but as a forum for exploiting her established sense of wry humor and caustically tongue-in-cheek comedy. In a sense, the psychiatrist's diagnosis at the end of the book is actually an excellent summation of the significance Stuart is searching for throughout the course of the book: the Lowell family may be wacko, but it's the only family...
...shines most and isultimately a completely satisfying read not as acoming-of-age story, a literary analysis or atravelogue, but as the hilarious personal memoirits madcap opening (in which Stuart races tofinish her application to Harvard the morning it'sdue) purports it to be. This opening also showshow her humor is mixed in with bittersweetrecollections of a life among unfounded arroganceand neurotic quirkiness: the problem Stuart facesin writing her essay--of defining herself based onher own merits and the merits of her first cousin(once removed) Robert Lowell-soon becomes thecentral focus of the book. The book is Stuart'sattempt...
That being said, it seems pointless to mention that the 163-page collection of totally fabricated celebrity dirt is perhaps a little too darkly funny for some of us. (Don't worry; it will be mentioned anyway.) Stewart's bizarre sense of humor--an almost schizophrenic mating of pseudo-highbrow Lampoon humor with seventh grade locker room jokes--brought him notoriety, though not much air time, on the short-lived "Jon Stewart Show" on MTV. In book form, however, his alternatingly grotesque and hysterical comedic style finds a happy home. These are not jokes that would work in a standup...
Unlike most horror movies these days, Chucky has a smart, talented director in Hong Kong's Ronny Yu, who also directed the excellent Cantonese-language Bride With White Hair. Chucky's Hong Kong action-movie heritage is evident in the extreme violence and good, lame humor present. Everything bursts into flames and blows up: a police car, a RV, a waterbed (no joke) and much more. A person hit by a Mack truck is completely atomized. John Ritter (as the police chief out to separate our teen lovers) is murdered horribly--twice! A goth who wears Speedos (played by another...
...Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, Plan 9 From Outer Space and Troma classics like Surf Nazis Must Die and Class of Nuke'em High. The concept is not just perfectly ridiculous--that didn't save the dull, dull, dull Leprechaun 4: In Space-- but is also perfectly executed, with humor and style...
