...matter of carving out an identity as a female candidate, a tricky proposition when Sarah Palin, for all her flaws, is the rock star of the party. Whitman is fashioning herself as sort of anti-Palin. Whereas Palin can be catty, superficial and outrageous, Whitman is wonky and almost humorless, as if too many consultants (she has about two dozen) have massaged and smoothed over her imperfections so effectively that she's as brittle and shiny as a Christmas tree ornament. She presents herself as a pragmatist who doesn't much care about tightening gun-control laws or limiting...
...immediately upon his arrival home only to reveal that she’s been considering marrying her new boyfriend. Montgomery is soon paired with a gruff superior named Captain Tony Stone (Woody Harrelson), a recovering alcoholic and serial womanizer who at first glance seems to be a stern, humorless caricature of a military...
...accessible moments. The album front-loads its two catchiest songs immediately after the opener. “Mind Eraser, No Chaser” features vocals by both Grohl and Homme, although this serves only to reiterate the superiority of the latter. Grohl’s over-enthusiastic and humorless singing pales by comparison with Homme’s sophisticated sneer, and fortunately most of the album sees Grohl consigned to his natural place, behind the drum kit, providing successfully muscular, if surpisingly understated, beats. The other clear choice for a single, “New Fang,” tells...
...married women fare no better than the minorities. These are retro, sitcom-style wives, bland and humorless. Ronnie frets about kitchen tiles. Lucy lusts after the Fabio-type yoga instructor (Carlos Ponce, ripping off Hank Azaria's shtick). Cynthia lives to please her controlling husband. At least two of them seem to have shackles to throw off, but in the movie, the only things they free themselves from are their clothes, so we can see how they each measure up to those most demanding of standards of director Peter Billingsley: the ability to rock a bra and panties...
...admire about HEALTH. They have ambition, musical skill, fabulous drumming and the ability to combine a remarkably diverse set of influences into something recognizably their own. Yet their project is in a sense doomed by its very nature. The number of great albums that are this uniformly morbid and humorless can be counted on one hand, and Jake Duzsik is no Ian Curtis. For now they remain a band of promise rather than one of real achievement. —Staff writer Keshava D. Guha can be reached at kdguha@fas.harvard.edu...
