Only a few months ago I reread some of Steinbeck's books. I was deeply moved by The Crapes of Wrath and delighted by Cannery Row. Probably compassion, humor and good characterization are unsophisticated or passé to the writer of your Steinbeck article [Nov. 2], but a few of us still enjoy them.
