Reflected Richard afterward: "The first task I had to achieve was to try to put it over that they could trust me. I think we've got over that hump. I feel that Ian Smith feels exactly the same. If I can get the trust of the parties, then I can perform my real function, which is bridging." It is a function that Richard regards as essential for the success of the conference. "To be frank," he says, "what we'll be talking about around the table in the plenary sessions is less important than what...

It's kind of culturally telling, you know, how they free associate from Turks and Indians to Native Americans and that most pious national holiday, Thanksgiving, then face off over whether or not their old ladies hump gobblers. The sociologist from HEW will tell us why Murph doesn't have anyone to go home to and devise training programs for sweet lady social workers so they don't give knives (for whittling wood) to hoodlums on a rap for slicing kids. Liberals have forgiven Humphrey, mostly because they have...

...wife followed shortly thereafter by her emotional annihilation. Round after round of George vs. Martha actively involves Nick and Honey, a young married couple who spend the entire evening entertained by their baffling hosts. They are introduced to such favorite American pastimes as "Get the Guests" and "Hump the Hostess". Honey hasn't the stomach for the escapades and finally curls up in a fetal position on the bathroom floor. While Nick has leapt, feet first, into an upstairs bedroom with Martha, George pulls a volume from a shelf of his extensive library and reads: "And the west, encumbered...
