...chaotic life of screenwriter Joe Eszterhas could serve as a high-concept sequel to The Player, last year's scathing parody of movie industry manners. Fade in: A Hungarian emigre becomes a hotshot newspaper reporter in the 1960s, reinvents himself as a gonzo journalist and gets the call from Hollywood to write scripts. He clashes with studio heads and Hollywood power brokers, even the awesome Michael Ovitz, but he survives and thrives. As he turns out a succession of sexy, if not particularly smart, screenplays such as Flashdance, Jagged Edge and Basic Instinct, his fee rises to a record-breaking...
...weeks watching her father -- the gruff, authoritarian and inspiring Hugh Rodham -- slowly slip away. She comes from a family so bizarrely intact that the whole group went on the Clintons' honeymoon to Acapulco. The extended family had dinner together most weekends and played marathon games of Trivial Pursuit and Hungarian rummy, a card game so byzantine in its bylaws that only close friends or relatives can participate...
Salonen's goals include introducing more contemporary music to the orchestra's staid programs -- a recent concert included two works by Gyorgy Ligeti, with the avant-garde Hungarian composer present -- and splitting the orchestra up into smaller, more flexible ensembles suited to the music of the classical period. Such notions are a marketing department's nightmare, but Salonen is adamant: "The orchestra must be a source of enlightenment." After 11 years of the saintly Carlo Maria Giulini and the ineffectual Andre Previn, the Philharmonic is ready for a youthquake. But even though Salonen is its youngest conductor since Zubin Mehta...
TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY PIANISM IS shrouded in a golden-era haze, but just how good was it really? A new double CD from Pearl Records, THE PUPILS OF LISZT, provides some clues. Here are such pedagogic scions of the Hungarian firebrand as Eugen D'Albert, Moriz Rosenthal, Arthur Friedheim and six others. Even allowing for poor recording quality and the advanced age of some of the performers, what is remarkable is how ordinary most of the playing is. Only the dazzling if sometimes clumsy Rosenthal and the elegant Jose Vianna da Motta would get a second listen today. Friedheim...
...BEST THING ABOUT TALES FROM HOLLYWOOD is its subject. Christopher Hampton's 1982 play focuses on leading German literary emigres who settled in the film capital in the '30s and '40s, namely Bertolt Brecht and Thomas Mann and his brother Heinrich (along with Austro-Hungarian dramatist Odon von Horvath, who never really made it to America but serves as fictionalized narrator). Yet an impressive cast -- Jeremy Irons, Alec Guinness, Sinead Cusack -- cannot lift this PBS American Playhouse adaptation much above elegant name dropping. Despite snatches of Ragtime-esque fantasy and an ending that pays homage to Sunset Boulevard, the drama...
