...that had battered him in the first place. For months Kerry has been caricatured as a weak lefty waffler, most recently in an ad sponsored by the National Rifle Association's political arm showing the Senator as a poodle with pink bows over the line THAT DOG DON'T HUNT. So uncommitted debate viewers were probably surprised by what they saw for themselves: a TIME poll found that after the first debate, Kerry's favorability ratings actually surpassed the President's. By 5 points, voters found Kerry more likable than Bush, even as they viewed Bush as more steadfast...

...Supyan Taramov, a Moscow-based property developer from Vedeno, Basayev has all the Russian military and intelligence installations in the region under surveillance. "Some of his relatives are in the police here," says Taramov, who once employed Basayev but in 2000 formed a pro-Russian military unit to hunt him down. Taramov claims Basayev's men routinely buy weapons, information and equipment from the Russians - and even get local officials to ferry him around. The tapes chronicle the efforts of filmmaker Don Larson (George Calil) and his translator, Wali Zarif (Wali Razaqui) to record and possibly join the hunt for Osama bin Laden. The foibles in the fiction prompt a host of questions that distract from the substantive reflection that the film would otherwise promote. Johnston aims to debunk the myths of the Afghani situation, but should have realized that original footage of a war zone?...

More Wal-Mart than Tinseltown, Sinclair (headquartered on Beaver Dam Road in Hunt Valley, Maryland) hardly provides the conservative answer to Hollywood. It is however, a solidly Republican media conglomerate: its executives have given generously to GOP candidates, and one of its vice presidents doubles as a conservative on-air commentator. Its airing of Stolen Honor, produced by the former Washington Times reporter Carlton Sherwood, may be subject to federal regulations requiring networks to provide candidates with equal time...
