...number of scientists had previously suggested cosmic rays as an ideal weapon to use in the quark hunt. If one of these high-speed bits of matter struck an atomic particle, they calculated, its tremendous energy would accomplish what no man-made atom smasher can do: split that particle into its constituent quarks. A particle with an energy of 200 billion electron volts, for example, might be enough to pry apart the three tightly bound quarks that theoretically constitute a proton. But a machine that can supply such energy will not be available until the AEC completes its giant accelerator...
...basketball hike the stakes and make the potential for corrupting athletes great. Even if he does not succeed in fixing a game, the Cosa Nostra agent finds information about a team's morale or physical condition priceless in helping him to set odds. On just such an information hunt, a scout for Chicago Handicapper Burton Wolcoff wangled his way into the clubhouse of the Los Angeles Dodgers a few years back. Learning that Sandy Koufax, who was scheduled to pitch that day, was having even more arm trouble than usual, the agent flashed the news to Wolcoff, who put down...
...Bill Hunt was probably the best speaker in the movement. At Monday night dinners in the Arlington St. Church, he had his own circle around him. That was the one solid thing about the Resistance. They'd stand by the entrance to the meeting room downstairs and aim umbrellas to you and take your picture, click. The women in the Unitarian church made dinner and about a hundred people...

He gave that speech the night the Supreme Court reversed a lower court decision and sentenced David O'Brien to five years for burning his draft card. David was there and the speech cheered him up. Later, the judge whose decision was reversed decided that no Supreme Court was going to reverse his decision. He suspended the sentence...
Mike Ferber, Bill Hunt, and the community feeling in the Resistance were probably more convincing than the war as reasons to hand in your draft cards. Almost everyone later decided that there were better places to fight the war than jail. The people who didn't receive 4-F's or 1-Y's took back their 2-S's. It was easy to say that the whole strategy of the Resistance about filling the jails to end the war was wrong. It was good to have a handy rationalization around...
