There are countless other issues entwined in this mess of presidential proportions. Kenneth Starr might be praised in some circles for his role in uncovering the scandal. He shouldn't be. He extended the purview of his office far beyond Whitewater into the realm of a witch hunt. The Republicans, unusually quiet on this issue, may seem untainted by comparison with this disaster. Don't forget that their Speaker of the House prevaricated to the Ethics Committee about his shady book deals and that they have allowed their lobbyists to stand on the edge of the House floor, writing...
...Deacon musing on the past as he drives around in Ruby: "He [Deacon's grandfather] would have been embarrassed by grandsons who worked twelve hours five days a week instead of the eighteen-to-twenty-hour days Haven people once needed just to keep alive, and who could hunt quail for pleasure rather than the desperate need to meet a wife and eight children at table without shame." Can this intense imaginative sympathy really come from an author who is merely intent on making a feminist argument...

Most important, she has an answer for most of Melvin's zingers--which might be why he is so smitten with...
...holiday releases: a bit old-fashioned in the sweet, simple values it embraces, but with a decidedly modern slant. The film's genuinely funny, moving script will make the audience feel as if it's earned a pleasant afterglow (and perhaps a Kleenex or two). Nicholson and Hunt are strikingly good, and James Brooks shows that he knows how to craft a clever love story. There's no shame in letting yourself get carried away by As Good As It Gets--you're in good hands...
