...Your heart sinks when you see the grim and unwelcoming opening shots of Frozen River, a first film by writer-director Courtney Hunt, shot digitally and featuring a cast that is off the thermometer when it comes to name recognition. More indie earnestness and uplift, you guess - the kind of picture only Sundance could possibly love. (And Sundance did love it; it won the 2008 Grand Jury Prize for best drama...

...Courtney Hunt is a spare writer and a very objective director. Her film is all show, no tell. It doesn't whine or speechify or make liberal-minded, quasi-political appeals for relief of its characters' hard lives. She lets us come to care for Ray at our own unforced pace, and Leo plays superbly in that patient vein. There's nothing overtly heroic about her as she plods forward under her burden of her small-scale dreams. She's not cynical, but she's not expecting much, either. ...wave of returning gang members hit Central America in the mid-'90s, when the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) was given more power to hunt down and prosecute illegal aliens. According to the INS, the number of criminal deportations to Mexico and Central America has doubled since 1995 to 62,359 last year. INS officials concede that many of these "removals" belonged to gangs, either in prisons or in Hispanic neighborhoods back in the U.S. In Florida and New York, aliens in jail for criminal acts are given a choice halfway through their term to either be deported immediately...

...Much more painful for the McCanns, though, is the fact that months of police investigation have left them no nearer to finding their daughter. Kate McCann on Monday lamented the "detrimental effect" suspicions of the parents' involvement may have had on the hunt. The release later this week of a book on the case by Goncalo Amaral, the police officer who led the investigation into Madeleine's disappearance until he was removed from the position in October, won't help; Amaral claims there's evidence that Madeleine died in the family's apartment. Meanwhile, any further investigation of the case...

Within three months of the discovery, the insect had become the most common species in the garden and was spotted in other central London parks, sending Barclay on a worldwide hunt to identify it. Correspondence with colleagues around Europe led Barclay to discover that the insect, which resembles the common North American box elder bug, is actually most closely related to Arocatus roeselii, a relatively rare species of seed eaters usually found in central Europe. But those bugs are associated with alder trees rather than sycamores. An insect specimen found in Nice, France, which is now in the collection...
