Indeed, a depressing array of defense and foreign policy experts, including members of the uniformed military, have quietly concluded that postwar Iraq is the most vexing theater of operations the American military has faced since Vietnam. Even if Saddam Hussein is captured or killed, most experts (outside the Pentagon) believe that the restoration of order will be extremely difficult. The violence being perpetrated there is committed by gangs, some motivated by politics, others by criminal instincts; some are supporters of Saddam Hussein, others his most ardent opponents. The Saudi government is at least as corrupt as Saddam Hussein's was, and its citizenry are far more anti-American than the average Iraqi. I was horrified by the description of the death of Uday Hussein, which said a soldier "pumped two bullets into Uday's mouth, to ensure his death." This was sickening. I reject the cold-blooded stalking and killing of anyone, even a murderous dictator and his family. This was an extreme example of American savagery. Why weren't Uday and Qusay brought to trial?
