A onetime street hustler convicted of murder, he was talking about his solitary confinement after a 1968 riot at the Lorton Reformatory near Washington, D.C. Brown lost track of time-first the date, then the day of the week, eventually even night and day. "I used to talk to myself and laugh and cry," he remembers. "I wanted someone to see me, to say they cared." Finally, one day, the sliding panel in his cell door clicked open, a hand reached in with two packs of cigarettes plus a ration of candy...

...McKay is a jaunty, dapper hustler who earns upwards of $75,000 a year from his jobs as coach, athletic director, weekly TV football analyst and after-dinner speaker. Two years ago, he turned down an enticing $100,000 offer to coach the Los Angeles Rams. It lacks any substantial portion of compassion, however, any shred of insight to lift it above the level of a slumming expedition...

Gordon Parks Jr. has just turned director and completed shooting his first feature, Superfly. An independent production, the film, about a Harlem hustler confronting his world, is still in the adventure genre but with deeper implications. "There's more energy here," said the younger Parks on his set. "It's a lot more relaxed, more informal. Our crews are smaller and communication is better-most black film makers want to be realistic." Says Hugh Robertson, a black film editor hired by MGM to direct his first movie: "Some of the stories we'd like to make...
