...budget deficit back in 1998 when Lansdell, then acting manager, agreed in desperation to try a feng shui (pronounced fung shway) practitioner. It could be coincidence, but within three weeks of her visit, Lansdell was promoted to full-time manager of Gardena, whose economy then got a boost when Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt bought a bankrupt casino there. This month Lansdell expects Gardena's deficit to decrease to $2.9 million...

Winston ("Tuffy") Foshay is a good hustler. If he were working on Wall Street, he would be called a Mover. So the fact that this 19-year-old drug dealer decides to launch a campaign to become a New York City councilman doesn't seem a stretch. Especially since his mentors are themselves unconventional--Spencer Throckmorton, a black rabbi, and Inez Nomura, a Japanese-American activist. Beatty's second novel (The White Boy Shuffle was his first) is like an extended rap song, its characters recounting struggle and survival with the bravado of hip-hoppers. But then, that's exactly...

...wife evidently felt otherwise, strongly enough to pile her son into a makeshift boat piloted by her hustler boyfriend and set out to sea--a fatal choice, as it turned out. The last decision she made was perhaps the one that saved her son's life, when she dressed him for the journey in the bright orange jeans and sweat shirt that fishermen say they found him in, colors that often keep sharks away...

He had been seeing Elizabet since 1997, when she was divorced from Elian's father. In the summer of 1998, Munero and three friends made the trip to America on a tiny boat. But that autumn he returned to Cuba--heartsick, relatives say, to be away from his family and Elizabet. He was thrown in jail, but a few months months later, after his release, he began working to persuade Elizabet to join him on a second...

...Though not conveyed in the most ingenious manner, these themes in Dogma remain provocative, to say the least. They often take the form of shots at the church (to lessen the ennui, a churchgoer reads "Hustler" during a service Bethany attends), but never do they lead to God-bashing. You see, Smith doesn't satirize God, per se--he satirizes the inadequate human perception of God. Our quest to interpret the will of the divine has lead humans to murder, war, persecution, suspicion, and a bevy of other moral wrongs. The funny (and much less extreme) situation that Smith uses...
