From Buddhists who traveled up from India in the 7th Century, over torrential rivers and through snow-swept passes of the Himalayas, the Tibetans adopted their faith-Lamaism. A powerful hierarchy grew up, with lamas (monks), priests, metropolitans, abbots, hutukhtus (saints).
