...sound crazy to some, but Specter's solution has already gained more currency among Republicans than any other impeachment alternative -- such as Gerald Ford's public rebuke plan, or the White House-favored "censure-plus." Even Henry Hyde had to admit the senator was "ahead of the curve," although he added that nothing would halt his committee's impeachment probe before Ken Starr has a chance to speak on November 19. Still, with at least five Republican representatives having come out publicly against impeachment over the past few days, GOP lawmakers no longer have the votes in the House...
...meet the criteria of high crimes and misdemeanors. Republican disgust and frustration was everywhere. South Carolina firebrand Bob Inglis accused his guest Schlesinger ?- perhaps the most respected historian in America ?- of having "a great deal of sophistication but very little common sense." Cold comfort for committee chair Henry Hyde, then, that Monday?s Supreme Court ruling would allow him to call Clinton confidant Bruce Lindsey. Hyde said he despaired for "the rule of law". It was a comment on Slick Willie?s slipperiness; it might equally describe how Hyde's own committee is falling apart...

"At the appropriate time, in the appropriate way, we will say whatever we intend to say" was all President Clinton offered reporters in reaction to the letter Hyde sent Thursday. However, it's not as if he didn't know in advance that the Judiciary chair would be requiring a whole bunch of answers as the price for a speedy impeachment inquiry. And the longer some of the queries go unanswered, the worse it looks for the White House...

As aides may point out, Clinton has already answered many of the questions in his last two depositions. Some of them go beyond the scope of Starr?s report -- to ask about White House gumshoe Terry Lezner, for example. The list is highly repetitious -- some might say petty -- and contains mistakes that would shame a county lawyer. "Do you admit or deny that on or about Dec. 28, 1998 ?" begins one query. Nevertheless, it would...
