Switching to another mood, Khrushchev boasted that "in five to seven years we will be stronger than you. We developed the hydrogen bomb before you. Our rockets carry warheads many times larger than yours." Later, he mawkishly spoke of the man responsible for all this progress, the same man that he himself denounced three years ago in his dramatic, weepy oration to the 20th Party Congress as a maniac who had deported, tortured and killed by the millions. Describing Stalin's last days, in the first such account ever given a Westerner, Khrushchev told Harriman that for three days...

...Berkeley, Calif., one of the world's biggest, most complex and most dangerous scientific instruments was ready for full operation for the first time. Its name was a tongue twister: the liquid hydrogen bubble chamber, designed and built by the University of California's Radiation Laboratory. In the next week or so, a beam of antiprotons from Berkeley's great 6 billion-volt Bevatron will pass through a pipe 200 ft. long, enter an odd-looking building and strike into a glass-topped metal bathtub containing 150 gal. of liquid hydrogen. As the antiprotons travel through...

...audience. He was at the White House delivering a strobo-scopic gadget he had invented to improve President Eisenhower's golf game. But Alvarez knew about the Glaser paper, and had plans for improvements. The best liquid to use, he thought, was not ether; it was pure liquid hydrogen, which contains no carbon or oxygen atoms to confuse researchers...

Peaceful Condensation. The real universe is not a smoothed-out gas. It contains condensations: galaxies and clusters of galaxies, each made of billions of stars and surrounded by clouds of gas. Inside these units, say Lyttleton and Bondi, there is no electrostatic repulsion. Instead, some of the hydrogen atoms between the stars are ionized (i.e., separated into a proton and an electron) by light and other radiation. These ions form a kind of electrical conductor: free protons move to the outside of the unit until they have carried away enough positive electricity to make the interior electrically neutral...

...rays are the protons that were expelled from galactic units to make their interiors electrostatically neutral. Those expelled from big units have the highest energy, perhaps many billion billion volts. They cross intergalactic space at close to the speed of light. They are not bothered much by the thin hydrogen gas between the units; they can travel through it for trillions of years without encountering anything that will check their progress...
