Gabrielse and Khabbaz then added a negative hydrogen ion--a proton with two electrons around it--to the field. While the two particles moved in circular orbits, Gabrielse and Khabbaz measured the frequency at which each of the particles oscillated with a very sensitive radio...

Gabrielse and Khabbaz used a negative hydrogen ion instead of a proton in the experiment because it allowed for greater accuracy of measurement after correcting for the additional electrons...

...from the desert test range and order the pacifist Bishnoi herdsmen, who refuse to kill animals or cut down trees, to evacuate. At precisely 3:45 p.m., three devices explode in five seconds: a normal fission bomb, a low-yield bomb for tactical battlefield use and something like a hydrogen bomb, which U.S. officials later insist could have been only a less powerful "boosted" weapon using tritium fuses to amplify the fission chain reaction. Altogether they unleash around 80 kilotons of atomic power, six times as powerful as the Fat Boy dropped on Hiroshima. The ground shakes sharply beneath...

...before you grab your prospecting pans and kettles, a word of caution: All we've actually detected is hydrogen atoms. "The presence of water is a logical conclusion, but it is a leap of faith," says Alan Binder, a lead scientist on NASA's Prospector team. "We will have to sample it before we really know for sure." NASA admits, however, that had they known about this back in '69, it would have altered their entire lunar exploration strategy. Who knows, we could have all been sipping moon margaritas by now -- on the rocks, of course...

...even more advanced technology, the fuel cell, is being pioneered by a small Canadian company called Ballard Power Systems. The fuel cell combines hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity cleanly and quietly; the only waste it produces is water. Small, mass-produced and without moving parts, the devices are a spin-off of the U.S. space program, which uses them to meet the electricity needs of the shuttle fleet. Fuel cells could one day sit in millions of basements producing power and hot water without fossil fuels...
