There was no blotting the bleary enthusiasm of the quarter-million conventioneers who overwhelmed Las Vegas last week for the annual computer hype-athon known as COMDEX. Teetering local phone systems that tumbled nightly at 7, double-booked hotel rooms and taxi lines that lasted longer than a Siegfried and Roy show seemed much less inconvenient when viewed as proof of the rightness of the computer revolution. Surely, the logic went, this many people can't be wrong. Even the sobering news that cash-starved CompuServe (which carries TIME online) was scrapping its failing Wow service didn't spoil...
...that saw Toshiba release an impressive desktop PC, Sony take a first crack at a personal computer and a swarm of companies come out with hand-held devices, including the first really usable palm-top computer from U.S. Robotics. The year also included the nearly incessant squeal of Internet hype--and a stock market that couldn't get enough of hot-concept technology issues. ...Wislawa Szymborska has been awarded the 1996 Nobel Prize for Literature [Milestones, Oct. 14], one can hardly buy her poems in Polish bookstores--they are sold out. These days our life-style has changed; we scarcely have time for poems. It is sad that we need a kind of hype to get interested in the wonders of poetry.
