...Busch-Reisinger has accumulated over the past century an impressive holding of post-1880 German art with a particular emphasis on German Expressionism. The stark curation and sparing use of didactic wall texts are appropriately austere, boldly offsetting the colorful effusiveness of Gerhard Richter and the restrained hysteria of Max Beckmann. Also notable is a series of Bauhaus paintings (including works by Malevich and El Lissitsky), a pair of Jawlensky portraits, and an unusual Klimt. Currently on display is a collection of works by Hannah Darboven, touted by the curatorial staff as "one of the most important active German artists...
Nicholas Lemann wants educational opportunity for everyone. He wants less emphasis on the "right" colleges and less hysteria about and dependency on standardized testing. He wants a society in which achievement need not be academic or youthful to be rewarded. In short, he wants students who are learning rather than earning grades. I absolutely agree. But in trying to reach these goals, he advocates a system at once even more divisive based on educational background and even less adept at providing young Americans with the opportunity to work hard and reach their potential later in life. (I wanted to make a last ditch run to the bathroom to check my hair...
...high-toned horror of The Fly and Dead Ringers, he never matched the shocks of his early, amateurish offerings such as Rabid and They Came from Within. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, directed by Tobe Hooper in 1974, was almost comical in its killer-on-the-loose hysteria, but it set a new standard for slasher films to come. The masterpiece of the genre remains John Carpenter's Halloween (1978). Despite some Hollywood credentials (including a couple of name stars), it was shot for a mere $325,000 and had the deep-focus single-mindedness of a true horror exploiter...
