...right moment for just the right length of time, he gave his craft a "kick in the apogee" and moved it into an even more precise orbit. Curving between 107 and 217 miles above the earth, Gemini was now ready for its next test: release of the 76-Ib. Radar Evaluation Pod (REP). Fitted with bright, flashing lights and radar transponders, the REP would be an orbiting target for a carefully planned attempt to check the techniques of docking vehicles in space...

Bitter Sugar. Hit hardest are the producers of cocoa, which dropped 45% this year to a postwar low of 120 a Ib. in mid-July, and has rebounded only 10 since then. Brazil, Cameroon, Togo and the Ivory Coast have been hurt, and Nigeria is paying its cocoa growers partly with promissory notes instead of money. Worst battered is Ghana, where cocoa produces 60% of the national income. Because of the price drop and Dictator Kwame Nkrumah's overly ambitious development schemes, the country is struggling with the severest economic crisis in its eight-year history. Factories in Accra...

...situation is almost as bitter for sugar, whose market has been swamped by an unexpected increase in the Cuban crop. The price is off even more than cocoa's-to a 100-year low of 20 a Ib., 60% less than a year ago. Fourteen Latin American nations feel the pinch. Efforts to revive the paralyzed economy of the Dominican Republic are hampered by the fact that sugar is its No. 1 crop-responsible for more than 50% of its earnings in world trade...

Cheaper than Hamburger. Before he came to National, Bronx-born Gene Klein made his mark as a California used-car dealer by adopting an unusual pitch. He advertised that his cars were "cheaper per pound than hamburger," marked them variously at 440 or 660 per Ib. He bought 50,000 shares of National with his profits, wound up as president after the company ran into critical financial trouble. "There were so many fires to put out," says Klein, "that I had to make a list of priority fires." Klein sold off some unprofitable properties, clipped personnel, then went to work...

Then there is the mako, probably the flashiest fighting fish in the sea. A snaggle-toothed bruiser (record: 1,000 Ibs.) that roams far offshore in both the Atlantic and Pacific, the mako can swim at 40 m.p.h., bite clean through a 500-Ib.-test wire leader, leap 20 ft. out of the water-higher than any marlin. Enraged by the hook, makos have been known to yank luckless fishermen overboard or jump straight into a boat, tear the place apart, then leap back into the water to fight for another two hours. Their killer instinct lingers even after death...
