...work by one of our most energetic and capable instructors, Dr. Royce, which has never received due notice in our columns. We refer to his book entitled "California," a careful account of the author's mother state, which gives in short space a very clear and adequate idea of the history of California during the most interesting period of its growth, the years from 1846 to 1856. Dr. Royce first gives an outline of the earlier history of the state, and then tells of the American as its conqueror, and how his conquest was completed and supplemented in the ensuing...

...published a few days ago a statement of the possible future condition of religious matters at Harvard. The scheme, as proposed, is not original with the committee, as it is essentially the same plan as that which is at present pursued at Cambridge, England. The idea, if carried out, will obviate many difficulties at present attending our religious observances. The plan ought to meet with the approval of every friend of the university. ...project of forming a base-ball association of the principal preparatory schools of New England seems to have failed to receive sufficient support. The idea of an inter-scholastic league, which was first suggested by the Phillipian last October, was favorably received at Exeter and Williston, and was encouraged by the Princetonian, Yale News, and CRIMSON. No argument was brought forward against the formation of a league, but want...

Work has been begun on the Divinity Library. The establishment of such a library has long been discussed, and now that the idea is actually being realized, we shall soon see in our midst another improvement to the university. For, although when the plan of building a Divinity library was first broached, it was argued in opposition to the scheme, that the books of the divinity school might be placed in Gore Hall to far better advantage. When we consider the need of a law school library, the need of a separate library for the divinity school becomes evident. Books...

...regard to class games. A series of games will be of great advantage in bringing out men, and may result in producing some good players. With '86 the nine loses four of its best players, and the three lower classes are expected to fill these positions next year. The idea of offering a cup for the best pitching record is an especially good one, and may bring out a man who, with coaching, may fill this position next season. As it looks now there is no man who can be depended on to fill the position creditably. We would urge...
