Some party pros think a small nominating field would be ideal for Cuomo, with his national recognition and capacity to raise money. Says pollster Harrison Hickman: "He could be the Democratic pope, arguing points of fundamental theology directly with Bush." Whichever Democrats decide to go for it after November, their efforts will seem less suicidal than conventional wisdom had it for 18 months...

...were sold in the U.S., although that was a 21% increase over 1988 levels. A pity. Unlike the sweetish Rhines and Moselles of neighboring Germany, Alsace's crisp Pinot Blancs, spicy Gewurztraminers and luscious Rieslings are flowery in bouquet but normally bone-dry in taste, in short, ideal companions to such summertime staples as shellfish, grilled chicken and pasta salad. While heterosexual marriage was declared to be the "ideal," same-sex relationships were deemed acceptable for those with no "conscious choice" but to be homosexual. The statement also welcomes "all rabbis regardless of sexual orientation," asking gay clergy for "discretion," not celibacy. Local synagogues were urged not to probe the sexuality of rabbinical candidates. Samuel Karff, the Reform rabbis...
