Superficially, such an event seems like a small victory for student activism. Certainly the substantive content of the protest was contemptible--only an idiot or an unreconstructed hedonist would wish to smoke cannabis after being fully apprised of the drug's ill-effects. Yet perhaps its form--with its persistent challenges to authority and the status quo--represented a first step toward a broader social consciousness among college students. Even if the cause of cannabis is bankrupt, Mass-Can could still claim a bit of credit for raising the political consciousness of its followers...
...mentality of abstinence demands a certain elementary moral metaphysics. Teach this: the more you indulge in anything, good or bad, but especially bad--in drugs, casual sex, violence, idiot music, stupidity, driving 90 m.p.h., bad manners, rage--the more you lose. The more you abstain, the more you gain. This is not cheap rhyming paradox but a good truth that in the past generation or two has been swept away by raw sewage. For an adolescent, abstinence means security and, therefore, the freedom that comes with self-possession. Abstinence becomes a medium of clarity, the window through which...
...dream sequence. Well, maybe they're all dream sequences: Reve? What's that French for? Or all nightmares, because everything goes hilariously wrong. The boom mike dips into the frame. The film is funny without pushing it and is acted with a deft, manic touch...

This independent movie is about the filming of exactly three shots in an indie movie. "Everything goes hilariously wrong," chuckles Corliss. The boom mike dips into the frame. The idiot movie star unaccountably thinks he's a creative artist -- "imagine Kato Kaelin mistaking himself for Dustin Hoffman." It's a funny film, acted with a deft, manic touch...
GOEL: The movie was designed to center around Bullock. Any idiot could tell you that. She's a great girl and does a good job. Her new found stardom (thanks to Keanu Reeves and Speed) is well-deserved and highlights another great actress. I really liked Bullock's character. She was a great computer expert and was a hard-worker. Much of the movie centers around Bennett's first vacation in six years to Cozumel, where she meets Devlin, who tries to seduce her. Bullock is convincing as a loner who seems very happy in Devlin's arms after having...
