...race climaxed a year of hurt, bitterness and self-examination for both runners. Immediately after their Los Angeles mishap, Budd had approached Decker, her childhood idol, to apologize, but the frustrated U.S. star dismissed her with a curt "Don't bother." For Budd, the waiflike wonder whose shoeless style and record-smashing times had drawn worldwide attention in the months before the Summer Games, the accident was a traumatic blow to an already turbulent career. She had come under fire for obtaining last-minute British citizenship in order to race in the Olympics and evade the antiapartheid ban on South...

What all this means is that Billy Idol isn't the only bit of '80s cultural flotsam that has floated back lately. The art of that moment is of the moment again. How does it look to us now that the hype has dimmed? Just as it is in music and fashion, in the realm of art, it's a decade that remains a sore spot. A lifelong devotee of Swiss modernist Le Corbusier, Tange shared many of his idol's best and worst tendencies-his buildings could be brutal, cold and impractical, and have never been as well-loved as they are well-respected. A tireless theoretician and teacher, Tange's four-decade reign as one of architecture's brightest stars launched the careers of numerous disciples who continue his modernist mission-as he described it, to seek "the union of technology and humanity...

Life on American Idol has been downright off-key lately. First, an onscreen phone-number foul-up forced Fox to give viewers a second chance to vote. Then Idol judge Paula Abdul was fined and placed on probation for a hit-and-run accident (no one was injured) that happened on a California freeway last December. The good news is that Idol is TV's top-rated show, drawing more than 25 million viewers a pop. Maybe Miss Rush, Rush can spring for a limo...
