When DaimlerChrysler said it would move 6,000 jobs from a factory at Sindelfingen, near Stuttgart, to plants in northern Germany and South Africa unless workers agreed to wage concessions, it wasn't bluffing. So autoworkers' union IG Metall agreed to give up a 2.8% pay rise in 2006 in exchange for a job guarantee until 2012.
