...MacCready's daydreams involved nature's largest flying creation, the pterodactyl, which disappeared with the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. In 1986 a MacCready-inspired, wing-flapping, computer-brained, radio-controlled and astonishingly realistic pterodactyl was photographed as it swept over Death Valley, Calif., for the Smithsonian Institution's IMAX film On the Wing. Today his Gossamer Condor hangs alongside the Wright Brothers' Flyer and Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis in the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, which also includes the Gossamer Albatross and the pterodactyl in its permanent collection...

...Wilde didn't die of syphilis, but actually of a complex ear infection. If you're in the mood to carp about your cell phone bill, demand a salary review or petition your credit card bill, this seems like the time to do it...Gladiator is being shown on IMAX screens in major cities across the country starting this week. Can there be too much of a good thing? The idea of that much bone-crunching action on a thirteen-story screen makes me queasy just thinking about it... The Perfect Storm had absolutely nothing going for it-no character development, no suspense (we all knew the real story), no payoff. It would have played better as an IMAX two-hour CGI wave fest. ...hard to imagine being like 28-year-old Shaquille O'Neal. At 7 ft. 1 in. and 320 lbs., he is IMAX big, a human order of supersize fries, a skyscraper in size-22 sneakers. NBA stars, of course, tend to be tall, but there's usually a sense of elongation, of a body stretched, like gum, until it is long and thin. O'Neal seems like a man who has been magnified. He is not just tall; he is massive...

What can fill a screen 81 ft. high? Gods and monsters. The success of Fantasia/2000 in IMAX theaters is cuing top directors like James Cameron to the notion that the format might accommodate longer stories and higher budgets. For now, documentary spectacles still splatter the big wall. The Jordan movie--a star chat interspersed with clips from his final NBA playoff drive--has an adoring tone and the familiar slo-mo, wide-angle baskebatics. For higher highs and cooler thrills, go Cirque. The Montreal-based art circus has finally made a film that captures the joy and awe of shows...
