Ford Motor Co. scheduled a 6% rise for this week over last. Ford also started production of its new Galaxie (TIME, July 28), dreamed up last spring after Ford got a worried look at smuggled sketches of the 1959 Chevrolet. Rushed into production to compete with the Chevrolet Impala, the Galaxie series of six models has an elongated Thunderbird roof set on a Fairlane 500 body, lists at $2,303 to $2,591. ...Price Scramble. Chevrolet, due out in a fortnight, is the most completely restyled car in the low-priced three. The Impala features big, out-flaring rear fins, a rear window that sweeps around for a panoramic view and a front window that sweeps into the roof. This year's best seller among higher-priced cars is what the trade calls "the jewelry-box special"-Oldsmobile, with more chrome (44 Ibs.) than any other car in history. Now fourth, it is pushing Plymouth for third place. Among the low-priced three, the fancy Chevrolet Impala and Ford Fairlane 500 outsell less chromy models by three to one.
