Feiffer: I was really at a loss with Ford in the beginning. He's just a large, incompetent oaf. He has no malice and I don't think there was any deal with Nixon. Nixon never took seriously the signs that he would be impeached. Jerry was kind of impeachment insurance. "With a dope like Jerry in office, they'll never impeach me." He was always too cynical...

...intermediary with Nixon's aides. Becker, 36, who had worked in the Justice Department in 1966 and 1967 and was later an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Washington, is under federal investigation for income tax evasion. He had previously helped then-Congressman Ford in his ill-advised attempt to impeach Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas in 1969. Outside the White House on Thursday evening, an exuberant crowd of about 3,000 collected along Pennsylvania Avenue and in Lafayette Square. Some waved sparklers, some carried vindictive placards (EXECUTIVE DELETED, IMPEACH THE SYSTEM), and one planted on the White House fence a slightly spaced-out message of cheer: DING DONG, THE WITCH is DEAD. There were also some tearful admirers (GOD LOVES NIXON) who prayed for their fallen leader...
