...scrambled eggs and who will eat Frosted Flakes. There is a philosophical ideal involved in all of this, an ideal many of the convention members seem to take seriously. The ideal is a community in which individuals don't isolate themselves from others and refuse to accept imperfect goings-on around them. Only by working closely with others on a communal level to solve the little problems can we ever hope one day to be able to solve the more profound problems that we find in our society. Harvard teaches us not to ask questions...

Thanks largely to pressure from African states that reject the internal settlement, Muzorewa was refused permission to address the U.N. on a visit to New York last week. In an interview with TIME Correspondent Lee Griggs, the bishop conceded that the "socalled internal settlement" was imperfect, adding that "it was the best we could get, and the important thing is that we now have a basis for the transfer of power." Muzorewa firmly denied the familiar charges by Nkomo and Mugabe that he is, in their words, a puppet of Smith's. Said the bishop: "Nkomo negotiated with Smith...

Like the Watergate story, Nixon is still mysteries within mysteries to everyone. No one man, not even Haldeman, completely understands him. Although a parade of biographers has begun to place tiles in the mosaic, there are still huge blanks. In his effort to detail the slow, agonizing life of the aging spy, le Carre has gone overboard, producing a novel of epic proportions that conveys a theme of only moderate importance. What begins as a portrait of tired, dirty, washed-out and disillusioning reality becomes a frequently tedious chronicle of flatulent, hemmorhoidal and unnecessarily repulsive dreariness. The author uses a bludgeon when a tap on the shoulder would suffice--and heavy-handedness goes beyond his unsubtle attempts to expose the spy game. Le Carre's blatant symbolism...
