...Eddie Brock (Topher Grace), a.k.a. Venom. "I like being bad," he exults. "It makes me happy." The third of Peter's rivals, Eddie-Venom is the reckless spirit of what teens would do if they dared, if there were no consequences, no censorious adult monitoring them. His tone of impish hell-raising seems out of place amid all the agonizing analysands - Peter-Spider, Flint-Sandman and Harry-Goblin - seeking to purge their inner demons, receive absolution for their sins. In this very serious movie, only Grace and Raimi regular Bruce Campbell, in a nice cameo as a varry Franch maitre...
...actors, the Boston Ballet dancers did Shakespeare a disservice; most were rather unassuming as characters. The dancer playing the impish role of Puck, however, shined as a clear exception. Portrayed by Joel Prouty, he was the most vibrant personality on the stage, threading together the story and fixing the audience’s attention on his magical mischievousness...
...eighth album, the Argentine rock band sticks to the basics. The songs are guitar-driven, glam-rock-inspired ditties that make their point in less than three minutes. Singer Adrian Dargelos leads the charge with an impish voice that recalls the Strokes, but without the ennui. On pop-inflected songs like Puesto, it's impossible not to sing "woo-ooh" right along with the chorus. That doesn't mean the band has no bite. Smart lyrics take enough stinging jabs at kleptomaniac pols and the Argentine upper class to keep the band sounding authentically rebellious...
...That is no doubt just how the impish Fidel wanted it. His stunning and sometimes brutal expropriation campaign seized homes, businesses, farms and factories from tens of thousands of Cubans and scores of U.S. corporations, assets whose combined worth was $9 billion in 1960 and perhaps more than $50 billion today. (It was, in fact, the single biggest grab of U.S.-owned property in history.) When Fidel offered little if any restitution, the U.S. retaliated with an economic embargo against Cuba in 1962, which remains in place today...
DIED. Red Buttons, 87, impish funnyman who emerged from burlesque to forge an acclaimed acting career spanning more than 30 films, including They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and The Poseidon Adventure, and stints on TV's Roseanne and ER; in Los Angeles. He was born Aaron Chwatt, but some patrons at an early gig renamed him for his red hair and the brass buttons on his uniform. Buttons became a sudden star in 1952 with his CBS variety show, on which he danced goofily to a trademark lyric, "Hoho-hehe-haha. Strange things are happening!" That became a national...
