...recent letter to TIME (Dec. 12) : "The Veterans of Foreign Wars . . . is different from all other ex-service organiza tions in that we still continue to obtain new possible members and are a continuing body. Those last five words, which I have under lined, are of a sinister import. What does the "Junior Vice-Commander" of this organ ization who wrote you mean, if not that the V. of F. W. expect and hope that our country will wage yet another foreign war ? My late husband, the Rev. Jason Parks, was a saintly man devoted to works of peace...

This "nothing of importance" was the "November Revolution" of 1917. Out of it clanked and reared the present Communist State, trampling down Kerensky's puny and irresolute Republic. Last week the present masters of Communist Russia made public, contemptuously, the diary of the onetime Tsar of all the Russias, written at Tobolsk. On Nov. 14, when Nikolai Lenin's dictatorship was six days old, Diarist Nicholas Romanov was still in ignorance of its existence and jotted placidly: "Today is the birthday of dear mama* and the 23rd anniversary of our marriage. At noon we heard prayers. The choir...

Be it remarked immediately that they did these things better with the help of Mary Pickford's husband. Certainly there are enough important Latins in Hollywood to keep Mr. Dix, the American of them all, out of slit Spanish trousers and Mexican fandangos. He is pre-eminently a home boy and should be discouraged in any more attempts to hit for Fairbanks. The film as casual amusement is pleasing enough. Thelma Todd...

...Farrar left the Metropolitan. Greatest publicity has been given to an alleged row with Maria Jeritza, new Austrian import then, because Jeritza was given certain of Farrar's roles. But Farrar and Jeritza never met, the latter admired the U. S. singer tremendously, went often to hear her. The truth was that Farrar, sole relic of the Conried star system, was getting bits of discipline from the management. She herself was tired out, vocally, spiritually. The death of her mother had been difficult for her. There had been the divorce from Cinema-Hero Lou Tellegen* whom she married...

...Novelty came from Vienna, special import for Maria Jeritza. Erich Korngold, so it seemed, wrote it at the precocious age of 16; called it Violanta after his heroine, a lovely enough Venetian lady who hated and lusted and loved and died in such swift turn as to gray the hair of any onlooker. Jeritza played it for all there was there, took every phrase, every mood, tight between her teeth, shook them hard, tried to make them answer back, got small return...
