...anthropological mother lode. In a basin several kilometers deep, walls of strata lie exposed, many-layered sandwiches of volcanic ash and ancient sediments containing the remains of complete prehistoric environments. Organizing a team of fossil hunters, Leakey established a base camp at Koobi Fora, a mound at the inboard end of a long, crocodile-infested sand spit that curves out into the lake. Then he began following his nose?with remarkable success. Turkana has yielded the richest accumulation of remnants of man and his predecessors ever found in one area...

...fell, the grenade slipped from his hand. Passenger Roderick A. Hilsinger, a professor at Temple University in Philadelphia, snatched the grenade and lobbed it toward an unoccupied part of the cabin. The grenade exploded with a muffled roar, wounding Hilsinger and six others. A draining, plug had popped out of Mona Lou's hull; when Lewis pulled into Nassau to refuel, he had to leap overboard and plug the hole with rags to keep the boat from sinking. Finally, after 10 hr. 54 min. of whomping on the water, during which he averaged 54 m.p.h., Lewis crossed the finish line to win the $10,000 first prize by a margin of only four seconds...
