SHAKESPEARE'S SCRIPI COMES with everything: incest, murder, madness, invasions, court intrigue, a setting luxurious enough for Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, and an unrivaled richness of language. Ask anyone gazing into Larry "J.R." Hagman's eyes some Friday night: could anyone beat the tale of Claudius (Christopher Keyser) who murders his brother King Hamlet, marries his widow Gertrude (Thea Henry), revels in his incest-purchased court luxury, and dies at the hands of his ungrateful stepson, Prince Hamlet (Andrew Sullivan). Of the plot, I'll say no more--the midwestern English profs who pen Monarch Notes probably have...

ANDREW SULLIVAN plays Hamlet as a self-parody of the Perpetually Aspiring Male Actor (PAMA) of the 80's: if you're mad, shout; if you're sad, pout. Hamlet seems less like a boy obsessed with his father's death and mother's incest than some Valley Boy complaining about getting a Trans Am and not a Porsche for his 16th birthday. Under the supervision of Scott County Attorney Kathleen Morris, the number of arrests for alleged child sexual abuse grew. Fear spread through the once tranquil community. Children related detailed incidents of sodomy, incest and bestiality. One young girl reported being forced to eat a cat and a pet gerbil, "fur and all." A ten-year-old boy said he was kidnaped and driven to a party where whip-wielding women in see-through clothes forced him into sexual acts with other children and adults that were photographed...

...movies, of course, have long been partial to contemporary and often controversial social issues. But families in crisis have become especially hot topics since last January, when Something About Amelia, an ABC movie about incest, won both critical applause and big ratings. In October, viewers proved again that they will watch sober-minded dramas dealing with unpleasant family matters: NBC's The Burning Bed, starring Farrah Fawcett as a battered wife, drew the fourth highest ratings of any TV movie in history...
