Your Oct. 17 coverage of the John Day debates was well done and was a fine piece of writing. I am afraid, however, that your abbreviated description of the John Day bill may have left an incorrect impression on the minds of most readers. Financing the project would not be limited to three private companies. Nonfederal interests may apply to the Federal Power Commission for permission to participate. As a matter of fact, the Washington State Power Commission and several municipal agencies in Oregon have indicated interest in the proposal...
...Bush Unbound In his essay "why Bush has no fear" [Nov. 29], Charles Krauthammer argued that President George W. Bush has no need to be concerned about the political fortunes of an "heir" and so can do without popular approval of his actions. That is wildly incorrect. Team America pokes viciously at the liberals for being too contemplatively passive and relentlessly ridicules conservatives for being crazed, bloodthirsty gunslingers...
...rest of the night is a haze. I do know that I frantically called parents, friends, and the program director (who had given an incorrect cell phone number). I had lost contact with Ashley and eventually I passed out at my apartment at around 8 a.m. At 11 a.m., I woke up realizing that I had just missed the TGV—French for “very fast train”—to Provence with my program. I also had no idea what had happened to Ashley. It turns out that she had been kept (with Arnaud...
