Died. Jonathan Dixon Maxwell, 64, famed pioneer of the automobile industry; of pneumonia; at his home in Chesterton, Md. Starting his career as a bicycle tinker in Kokomo, Ind., Maxwell, with two others, Elmer Apperson and Elwood Haynes, built the first automobile manufactured in the U. S. (now stabled in the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D. C.). His plant at Tarrytown, N. Y., founded in 1904, became a thriving automobile centre, turned out the first cars (Maxwell-Briscoe) at the $500 mark.
