Robert Rubin's been a lame duck for only one day -- could the economy be overheating already? Well, Thursday's round of economic reports from Washington certainly raised a few red flags. The Labor Department's Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 0.5 percent in April, up from March's rise of just 0.2 percent. And though retail sales for April rose only 0.1 percent, inflation hawks would have much preferred a drop -- considering that April was the ninth straight month that America's drunken-sailor consumers spent more than the month before. TIME senior economics reporter Bernard Baumohl says...
SWITCH TO A "DIET COLA." More formally, adopt a formula for cost of living allowances that increases pensions less rapidly than the consumer price index rises. Inflation has subsided so drastically as to drain the urgency from this proposal. Also, because of changes in the way it is calculated, the CPI no longer overstates inflation by a bit more than one percentage point, as a government panel of economists thought it did two or three years ago. But some overestimation probably remains, and could cause trouble in the hardly impossible event that price increases speed up once more...
...League diamonds last week, it was as if we'd already forgotten that the Internet brings us vital medical information, cross-cultural dialogue, vast stores of learning and beauty and virtue. Such is the power of Web technology that the simple act of listing the phrases here will make it possible for anyone to type these words into a search engine and immediately locate...
...reflect the feeling around campus, or what Dr. Coley more clinically refers to as the "anecdotal experience of Harvard undergraduates." It looks, he reported, "like the number of new cases this year compared to last is actually less." This result is far from decisive, but it is the clearest index of a change that is available since both UHS and the Student Disabilities Office refused to release any numbers for publication...
...infamous report issued last summer by the NEC Research Institute announced that for all their inflated stock prices, the major search engines were only covering at best a fraction of the Web. Forrester Research estimates the size of the web at 500-600 million pages; AltaVista, which claims to index the most pages of any major search engine, only covers 150 million. The best bet, the report stated, may be search engines like Metacrawler, which simply aggregate search results from other engines.MORE...
