...Hedge funds as a class are still doing better than broad market indexes - or, rather, they have been performing less badly. The average hedge fund is down about 20% in 2008, according to Hedge Fund Research's HFRX global index. By contrast, the Dow has dropped 40% this year; MSCI's index of developed and emerging stock markets has plunged nearly 50%. But some large, established funds have taken big hits. In mid-October, the $17 billion Chicago-based firm Citadel Investment told investors that its flagship fund had dropped nearly 30% this year. According to Singapore-based Eurekahedge, which...
...Sunday, pledging to spend some 4 trillion renminbi - about $586 billion - on a wide range of moves designed to boost an economy starting to feel the effects of the worldwide financial crisis. The move was widely welcomed by economists and investors. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange's main index gained 3.5% on the following day, while the Shanghai Composite Index soared...
...worry that goes hand in hand with stimulus packages like this one is the possibility of stoking inflation. For the moment, though, Beijing can breathe easy on that issue. After wrestling to control rising inflation over the past 18 months, the government reported recently that China's Producer Price Index "declined sharply to 6.6% year-on-year in October, from 9.1% in September," Ulrich of JPMorgan wrote in her report. She noted that the Consumer Price Index, which will be released this week, will also moderate further from last month's level of 4.6%, which was the fifth successive monthly...

Job postings from employers fell in all nine Census Bureau regions in October, according to a report released by the job search website Monster.com, whose employment index slid 10 points last month after rising in August and September. The precipitous drop, said Monster Worldwide's vice president of research, Jesse Harriott, "suggests that U.S. businesses are scaling back their recruitment due to uncertainty surrounding the global financial crisis." Other reports confirm the trend: Almost 30% of executives surveyed by the consulting...
Production of Iskanders is planned for 2009. But the turmoil in global markets has hit Russia particularly hard. The main stock index is down roughly four times compared to a year ago, while prices for gas and oil - Russia's real weapons these past few years - have dived as well. Foreign currency and gold reserves shrank from nearly $600 billion in August to $485 billion last week, further undercutting Russia's clout. As the economy shrinks, as seems likely, the Iskander could end up looking like a costly extravagance. Under the circumstances, production of the missile might be delayed...
