Solidarity. One other matter which Republicans chewed over was their own internal organization. Joe Martin, as expected, will be Speaker of the House. The rivalry between Indiana's Charlie Halleck and Ohio's Clarence Brown for House majority leader will be fought out spiritedly; other candidates may complicate the race. But there was no sign of any deep developing rifts among the triumphant G.O.P. leaders. Vandenberg will preside over the Senate as president pro tem. Elderly (69) Wallace White, ineffectual minority leader during G.O.P. underdog days, will become majority leader by courtesy. The G.O.P. spark plug will...
...captained by Jonathan M. Wainwright V, the General's son, whose charges included an ostrich, a wildcat, a ringtailed monkey, four pythons and six hyenas. Across the U.S. on a lecture tour streaked Randolph Churchill, who was having hair-raising luck. While he was doing 50 on an Indiana highway a wheel flew off, but the car somehow remained right side...
This week Hoagy will broadcast from back home in Indiana, where Indianapolis Mayor Robert H. Tyndall has proclaimed "Hoagy Carmichael Day." Hoagy (short for Hoagland) was born in Bloomington, Ind. in 1899. His father was an electrician; his mother, an early ragtime pianist, played in a local movie. Locker-room strife at Indiana and Ohio State has been laid to just such indifference of the local "Yale" rivalries. The fact that Dick Harlow, working with much the same type of ex-servicemen, could maintain his team's morale, ignite it to the levels of Saturday's inspired first period--is evidence of the wizardry...
Young & Eager. Most of the freshman Senators are still young enough to train an ambitious eye on the future. Wisconsin's jovial Republican Joe McCarthy, ex-Marine aviation intelligence officer, is 36. At 38, smart Air Forces Veteran William Jenner is the fair-haired boy of the Indiana G.O.P. machine. Washington's 40-year-old Republican Harry Cain, a whirlwind campaigner, had twice been elected mayor of Tacoma before going overseas as a major in the A.M.G...
