...some Asian countries, such as Pakistan and Indonesia, marriage between close relatives is tolerated, even encouraged. The attitude is at least you know who you're getting and, if there is any wealth to share, you can keep it in the family. Most everywhere else, the practice is a social stain. Yet for increasing numbers of Chinese, the issue isn't a matter of choice-but survival. China is facing an alarming dearth of young brides. Two decades of restrictive family-planning policies have resulted in a drastic gender imbalance-the country is missing 50 million girls who would have...

...spectacularly beguiling baloney, breathtaking in scope. An estimated 90,000 individuals in Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia became G.O. "members," investing in the firm's schemes based on promises they could double or triple their savings. Until his operation unraveled earlier this year, Ogami, 39, had collected a total of $400 million, according to former G.O. ...picture has changed. In some interesting recent research, the Asian-economics team at HSBC has found that domestic consumption is running ahead of exports as a source of growth in South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. In Taiwan, HSBC estimates, private-consumption expenditure, which grew just 1.4% last year, will post a more respectable 3.8% growth in 2002. Moreover, construction is booming in Thailand and South Korea. Some countries--notably South Korea, whose forecast growth of more than 6% this year makes it the region's star--have introduced tax reforms to encourage consumer spending, and others...

...just a question of individuals," says Aris Santoso, a military analyst with a Jakarta think tank. "The institution itself must take the blame." Four middle-ranking soldiers and one police officer are currently on trial in Jakarta for a 1999 mass killing in East Timor. It is Indonesia's first human-rights court, but many doubt it will throw any light on the role senior officers played in orchestrating the violence. Another case in point: the murder of Papuan independence leader Theys Eluay, found strangled to death in Papua's capital of Jayapura last November. A special inquiry pinned...
