...either the First or Second Folio of Shakespeare; it was first published under his name in 1609. This is not conclusive evidence that the play is not his, but it points in that direction. Certainly the finale is Shakespearean, but the first two acts of the play are so inept that they could hardly be authentic. In any case, the Dunster House production of the play, which runs through this weekend, is probably the first since the Royal Shakespeare Company did it ten years ago, and may be the last for a long time...

...local inspector (Trevor Howard) is, of course, baffled. Circumstantial evidence convicts Salem's villainous brother-in-law Dr. Anton Jenks (Per Oscarsson). In suspecting Jenks, the inspector may be the most inept member of his profession since Peter Sellers' celebrated Inspector Clouseau, whose left hand never knew what his left hand was doing. For Salem leaves behind acres of fingerprints and miles of footprints in the brittle snow. John L. Loeb, the boss of Loeb, Rhoades & Co., told TIME'S Nancy Jalet that the endorsement was "inept, untimely and impolite to Bill Martin. The men who made the recommendation must have a death wish." Added Gustave Levy, senior partner of Goldman, Sachs & Co.: "I understand their fears, but they're acting too precipitately." Levy's remark drew a fast rebuke from Managing Partner William R. Salomon of Salomon Bros., the bond house and big block trader. "The vote in the special committee was 16 to 4," said Salomon. "If Levy wants to dissent he should...
