...hard to avoid the impression that we simply cherry-picked Obama’s (admittedly phenomenal) 2004 speech. While it was remarkably effective at bringing fame to the Illinois senator, it failed to change us in any meaningful way. Our notions about those who are ideologically distant remain inert, in spite of Obama’s early pleas...
...performed; those who've seen 300 know that Snyder is in no way an actor's director. It's not the energizing ineptness of an exchange in an Ed Wood movie, or the carefully detailed high camp of the performances in David Lynch's Dune. It's just, mostly, inert. (The two self-starters are Haley, who does right by his grizzled role, and Morgan, a Robert Downey Jr. knockoff, who chews the scenery and his stogie with equal aplomb.) And while the climax is unusual in a comic-book movie - bad guy does very bad thing, then escapes...
...made it extremely difficult to obtain funding. Her research focuses on harnessing fungi’s ability to remove harmful substances produced by mining sites. In particular, Hansel said that many mining sites have toxic concentrations of manganese, and that fungi are able to transform the metal into an inert form. Hansel said she plans to use the grant to expand her research by adding a new project—along with post-doctoral researcher Cara M. Santelli—to study the process by which fungi can break down other potentially harmful substances. The grant also requires that winners...
...upset the complacency of indie cinema. Pi, Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain were demanding and rewarding in various ways: the first wacko, the second gritty, the third sumptuously romantic, and all marvelously dense with imagery. So the big surprise in The Wrestler is that it's visually inert. Aronofsky's main camera habit is to follow Randy, just his imposing back, as he trudges through corridors toward another fight. (Martin Scorsese virtually patented that shot in Raging Bull and Goodfellas.) The trope does pay off later in the film, when the camera trails the briefly retired Randy down...
...onto a street speech by a local spellbinder: Adolf Hitler, two years before the Third Reich came to power. In 1936 Cooke wandered into an alley during Harvard's tricentennial celebration and saw two Secret Service men lean into a limo and lift out the polio-stricken "Franklin Roosevelt, inert as a sack of potatoes." In 1968 he was at the Ambassador Hotel when Robert Kennedy was shot, and filed one of the sharpest, coolest reports ever filed under the pressure of deadline and desperation...
