Switzerland's passion-charged baby-food libel trial (TIME, Feb. 16) has ended in something of a draw. The plaintiff: the multinational Nestle Alimentana, among whose myriad food products are powdered infant formulas marketed in less developed countries. The defendants: members of the Bern-based Third World Working Group. The group had distributed a German-language version of a British pamphlet that charged baby-food makers with causing the deaths of Third World babies by hard-selling their formulas to illiterate mothers incapable of preparing them properly. The Swiss pamphlet was entitled Nestlé Kills Babies. Two years...

With the zest he showed plunging into everything from alcohol to psychic phenomena, from sex to theology, James A. Pike became America's most controversial 20th century clergyman. As an infant in Oklahoma, he won the Better Babies contest at the state fair two years running. In 1969, still hyperactive at 56, he got lost and died in Israel's Judean desert−and was the first Episcopal bishop ever to have three surviving wives attend the memorial service at his old cathedral in San Francisco...

Some psychoanalytic researchers play down Freud's heavy emphasis on infant sexuality, arguing that it is merely one of many variables in early childhood that shape individual psychology. Dr. Galenson feels that adult sexual problems like frigidity may have their origins in these early months of life. To minimize these disturbances, she suggests that parents not flaunt sexual differences by marching...

...school for deaf-mutes in the Rhineland town of Brühl. Little Max briefly persuaded this eccentric sire that he was the child Jesus. Memories of this sort underlie Ernst's most notorious thrust of anticlerical wit, a spanking Madonna entitled The Blessed Virgin Chastises the Infant Jesus Before Three Witnesses (1926). When his baby sister was born and his favorite bird, a pink cockatoo, died on the same day in 1906, a whole sequence of bird fantasies was set in train. Generally they were alarming: Two Children Are Threatened by a Nightingale (1924) is filled with...
