...once the burglary is over, Director-Writer Jules (The Naked City) Dassin's imagination fails him. The remainder of the film, with its routine kidnaping, love interest and gang war, seems to have been made by a sadly inferior second team. Jean Servais is coolly efficient as the criminal mastermind, and Carl Mohner and Robert Manuel play his talented assistants. Director Writer Dassin is on screen, too, as an imported Italian safecracker who brings a Latin flourish to his work. "If I became known as some radical character," Daland says, "then I would reduce my usefulness to the University." Students at Alabama are unprepared to hear that Negroes are in no way inferior to white people. Their whole background and immediate environment hold that Negroes are inferior. Any professor who taught an undisguised theory of equality would immediately be relegated to the lunatic fringe...
...most complex factor of integration at the teaching level revolves around the qualifications of the Negro teachers. If Negro teachers are really inferior, no one can defend keeping them in an integrated school. But by breaking the vicious circle (bad schools giving bad educations to pupils who then in turn become bad teachers) at the student level, the first generation of teachers must invariably suffer...
