After exchanging some worn New York vs. Los Angeles one-liners, far inferior to Woody Allen's in Annie Hall, Fonda and Alda get all bittersweet. The heroine's lacerating wit, it turns out, is but a mask for her insecurity. The superficial writing is not helped by Alda's unprepossessing screen presence, Ross's melodramatic use of closeups, or by a gratuitous beach scene that exists only to show off Fonda in a bikini...
...stars are the animals: Kermit, the pure and reasonable frog; the ineffable Miss Piggy, every circumferential inch a lady; Rowlf the Dog, a philosophical pianist; Fozzie Bear, the can't-stand-up comic; and The Great Gonzo, the magnificently inferior creature whose inventors insist, despite damning evidence, that he is not a turkey. The romanticists idealize pre-industrial women who supposedly led full, productive lives. Although they were inferior in status to men, the argument goes, they worked so hard that they didn't have time to worry about it. The post-industrial romanticist maintains that women should remain in the home as before. But the authors argue that gradually the woman becomes an ornament, left with an unproductive, circumscribed...
