Usage:

Unfortunately, a certain group of undergraduates make a fetish of "recognition". They worship the varsity letter, the "cum laude", the Phi Beta Kappa key, not for the worthy efforts these symbols represent, but for the fancied prestige they infer. Failing to see that all glory depends on whole-hearted devotion to work, they attribute the glamor of the varsity letter to some intrinsic quality rather than to the strenuous efforts of generations of athletes. Their fatuous grinding away for "recognition" has for its goal an impossible flaunting of decorations, while the "big" man is invariably the least ostentatious...

After the address, President Eliot answered questions, in reply to one of which he said. "I think we must all infer that the policy of labor unions has not secured the present generation of working men any addition to their joy in work. The present generation of working men don't want to do any hard work, and this is especially true of the working men of the descent we roughly describe as American...

...fact remains that not over 10 percent of the people are literate, probably not over 10 percent of the children of school age are actually in Scholl and when one considers the financial resources of the country, the task of providing universal education seems almost impossible. One should not infer that illiteracy and lack of intelligence are the same thing. The Chinese are a highly intelligent race and if they can have the benefit of schooling they can become exceedingly efficient...

...sorry if I led anybody to infer that I meant that college magazines should lower their literary standards. But it is not a mistake to imply that literary merit and interest to the reader are incompatible? What I was trying to bring out was the point that an article need not be upon what is sometimes considered a "literary" subject in order to have merit. We who live in academic surroundings are perhaps too prone to think that if we write about Shelley we are producing literature, whereas if we write about football or the tutorial system, we are necessarily...
