...University squad had its usual batting and fielding practice yesterday afternoon. In the infield, Coolidge was again at second base, Skilton played short stop in Matthews's temporary absence on account of an injury, and Stephenson caught in the place of Kernan, who is recovering from a sprained ankle. The men all played with a great deal of spirit, and showed some improvement in throwing. Stephenson's throwing was rather weak, lacking both the speed and accuracy which had characterized Kernan's work...
...this year. The batting was again most unsatisfactory. Against a pitcher much inferior to Stillman, the team aggregated two less hits than their opponents, and were generally unable to hit at the opportune moment. One successful bunt was made. Although not spirited, the work of the men in the infield was fairly accurate, as is signified by two runs as against ten hits by the Williams nine. The three errors made were some-what excusable, and luckily not at all costly. The catch by H. D. Kernan of a foul fly deep in left field is praiseworthy. R. Kernan...
...home run. In the fourth, Randall made a base hit and was advanced to the plate by the three-brace hit by Clarkson, who scored in turn on Stillman's fly to the outfield. Daly reached first on a base hit, and R. P. Kernan made an easy infield hit, which was thrown wild, scoring Daly, and advancing Kernan to third. Carr then received a base on balls, when a well-executed double steal brought Kernan home, and advanced Carr to second. An error by Watson allowed Carr to reach the plate, leaving the score 6 to 0. The last...
...Freshman baseball practice yesterday was on the whole rather discouraging. Although the bunting was fairly good, the batting was weak, the fielding very poor and the throwing still inaccurate. Most of the time was spent in batting infield files to the second team while the first team practiced running bases. The pitchers, Burns and Castle, showed some improvement in watching men on bases and getting their throws...
...past week the Second nine has been practicing steadily on Soldiers Field and during that time the general playing has greatly improved. The fielding of the whole team is very good especially that of the infield, while the throwing to bases and general team work help to kept up the present good standard. The batting on the other hand is usually very poor though occasionally the men improve for a while. They all have a tendency to bat at high balls, and are unable to hit successively. It has been decided not to have a training table for the team...
