...baseball teams reported yesterday afternoon for the initial warming-up of the season. Practice started at 2.15 o'clock in the cage, and lasted for an hour and a half. At the conclusion of the workout Coach Duffy expressed himself as satisfied with the material so far offered. The infield will not start practice before March...
With good men competing for every position, Coach Ball should easily turn out a fast infield. W. F. Manley is the leading candidate for first base, and has been covering this sack in fine form in the cage. T. S. Woods, although inexperienced, has been hitting the ball hard in practice, and G. E. Ladd has also been showing up well. At second base J. R. Wolverton appears to be the best man, and is a hard hitter. H. D. Ward has been playing regularly on Team B at second and will be a strong contender for this position...
With the aforementioned exception of pitchers, there is a wealth of good material for every position in both infield and out. Law, Talley and Shea, veterans at the infield positions of the 1916 team, have been lost through graduation. These men had had several years' experience on the university squad, but in playing ability they were not more than fairly reliable, and it will probably be easy to fill their positions satisfactorily. Bauhan, captain of the 1919 team, will probably be tried out at shortstop, which position will be vacated by shifting Captain Driggs to catcher...
...record number of candidates responded to Coach Clarke's call for candidates and daily practices in batting pitching and infield work are being held in the indoor cage. Aside from the pitchers, Coach Clarke has a good field to pick from and he will probably be able to make up for the loss of six university men by graduation last spring, as there are an unusually good lot coming up from the freshman and second teams of last season...
...condition in the outfield is much the same as it is in the infield in that one regular has been lost. By the graduation of F. P. Coolidge '16 the team lost a fast fielder and a hard hitter and it will not be easy to fill his place. G. A. Percy '18, who broke up more than one game last year by his timely extra-base hits, and J. Knowles '18, regulars on last year's team, can fill any position in the outfield. E. L. Casey '19, captain of last year's Freshman team, and C. Wyche...
