This afternoon the Freshman baseball team will play Groton at Groton. Despite the severe defeat of the Freshmen by Andover last Wednesday, the team has shown some improvement during the past week, although the fielding is still weak. In the infield the men are inclined to be erratic, especially in the handling of thrown balls, while the out-fielders are slow in starting and lack confidence. In batting, the men show a little better form, and have learned to time the ball fairly well...
...error being made, Alexander was effective, striking out eight men and giving only one base on balls. Harvard scored in the first inning on Greenough's threebase hit and an error. In the sixth, singles by Grant, Murphy, and Sperry, together with three errors by the Holy Cross infield, resulted in three runs. In the last half of the ninth, Ford of Holy Cross made a two-base hit, stole third and scored on an error by Burns. With two men on bases, Alexander retired Walker, thus ending the game...
Practice of the University team yesterday afternoon was discouraging, in spite of the almost perfect weather conditions. The batting was fairly good, but this was in part due to the fact that Jackson and Castle, the usual substitute pitchers, were not used. The fielding, particularly that of the infield, was loose and unsteady. Stephenson was again tried at second base, but was still somewhat uncertain, his chief fault being slowness in starting...
...comparatively small score was due to the absolute inability of the Harvard team to hit at critical times, to three inexcusable errors by the infield, and to some stupid base running at the beginning of the game. The team made nine hits, thus improving over its work against Holy Cross on Saturday. On the other hand, seven men struck out and five men were left on bases, two at third and one at second. Castle played a good game, both in the box and at the bat, allowing but three hits and one base on balls and making...
Last year the team defeated Exeter in a slow six-inning game by a score of 11 to 0, five of the runs being directly due to errors by Exeter's infield. This year Exeter has been very erratic, at times playing brilliantly and at other times becoming very listless. In the game with Princeton on April 20, Exeter led by a score of 6 to 1 until the seventh inning, when the team became unsteady and allowed Princeton to score 12 runs before the end of the game. Exeter made twelve hits, however, against Stevens, who pitched for Princeton...
