...scarcely any time to give to painting. When he was able to work in oils he went at it slowly using tentative outlines and building up his forms with wash after wash of semi-transparent color to get the right modeling of light and shade. Infra-red photographs of spurious Daumier paintings showed clearly how this sensitive process had been misunderstood and faked by inferior artists...
...ultra-righteous and the infra-bad walked the boards of the Delta Upsilon chapter house last night, and will display their magnified virtues and vices again for the edification of Friday and Saturday night audiences. "Thorns and Orange Blossoms", this year's selection, is one of the most unrestrained of the lot of unblushing melodramas that evoked tears, hisses, and loud huzzahs from the playgoers of the nineties. Being for this reason one of the worst plays ever written, it becomes ideal material for the histrionics of a group of debonair young...
Another problem is that of flakes of fire on the sun, which last only three minutes but which are 2000 miles in diameter. These have been discovered with infra-red photography which has also enabled observers to see the "red nebulae" and the Roman candles shooting out from the sun which were pictured for the first time...
...Wilson Observatory have come to quite a different conclusion as to the size of the particles in the vast dust cloud of the Orion Nebula. In this case the particles scatter the blue and yellow-green components of the light of stars in the cloud, letting only long infra-red rays filter through. Hence the stars appear much redder than normal. The wave lengths Baade & Minkowski recorded convinced them that the dust grains in the nebula were about .000004 inch in diameter...
...Small particles like dust, fortuitous aggregations of molecules and droplets of water tend to deflect short wave lengths of light which approximately "fit" them, while longer wave lengths curl around these small obstacles. Long infra-red rays go farther through fog than visible light and still longer radio waves can go through buildings. In the visible spectrum, blue light is shorter in wave length than red. In the case of the evening sun, the blue components are scattered in all directions, and this subtraction makes the sun look red. But the blue light is scattered again & again in the atmosphere...
